BMW X5 E53 3.0i Automatic Transmission (SOLVED!) was created by imtight Once again I'm back with yet another BMtroubleyou! This time I got my self a BMW X5 3.0i 2000 model. In it second year of production, the 2001 BMW X5 was still getting quizzical looks from BMW purists and professional care reviewers. 'Must every carmaker build a sport-ute?' Groaned the editor of one automotive magazine. 'It's as ridiculous as if every manufacturer were to field a full-size pickup, or an econobox, or an armor-plated luxury sedan. I think the X5 represents the wrong direction for BMW.' But then again, was the 2001 X5 even a class SUV? It had a unitized chassis, not a ladder frame. It had a sophisticated independent suspension, not a live rear axle with leaf springs. Prison battleship h game. It also lacked a low range in its transfer case, 'which some SUVs wear as a badge of honor.' The SUV - or is it a car - was built on the successful 5-series sedan chassis, and, as a result, handled beautifully according to owners and reviewers. But the X5 does lack cargo space leaving some to wonder if they'd have been better off just purchasing a 5-series. What the hell does a oxygen sensor or gasoline formulation has to do with a trans fail safe light? These dealers in my opinion are feeding us garbage. I am having this issue with my E38 750il and to me no one really know what is going on. Low voltage to the tranny I can understand but not the fuel formulation or the oxygen sensor to thro a trans failsafe warning light just to make sense!!!Oxygen sensor are on the CAN bus which the EGS is also on the CAN bus. If the sensors fail it could cause erroneous faults in the EGS. Since you are sure that its garbage the dealers are feeding you (and I'm not trying to cause any arguments) then why don't you diagnos the OP's probelm. If a car comes in and you have a fault for something you ahve to replace the broken (obvious) thing first. You cannot just wave a magic wand over the car, and find out whats wrong. Then if that does not fix the problem, the real reapir is usually free since a lot of people (NOT ALL so don't beat me for this) whine, and say why didn't you find that the first time. Which they are correct but sometimes thats just not possible. At least that is what happens at the dealer I work at. Some of you may have some bad dealers, and cannot speak for them. If there were no dealerships there would be no BMW. I also have a 2001 X5 with 127,000 miles. I have had the Trans light come on three times. The first two times it was caused by an emission control part but last week it meant a new Trans. The dealer quoted $6200 for a replacement but recommended I have it rebuilt by a local reputable trans shop. Just completed to the tune of $5000. Supposed to be better than the BMW replacement because they update the unit. However, I found out it is a GM trans made in France. Just a fair transmission according to the shop. Not up to Toyota or Lexus standards but better than a Taurus! Makes you think! My battery went dead and re-charging didn't work anymore. So I had it replaced and on my way home I got the same error message 'TRANSMISSION FAILED SAFE MODE' As with other users on this post it's on 4th gear and triptronic didn't work. It was fine after I shut the car off and restarted it. So it seems to be consistent with other users who had battery issues. Has something to do with batteries although I'm not sure what it is. I'll keep my watch for the next few weeks and post any further observation. My wifes 2004 X5 3.0 just got this message. She was barely able to get to work. We bought the car 2nd hand, so don't have any history of a battery change out. I am going to try this first before I go any further.
